CHAPTER 11

A s I lie in bed after a fitful night, I flip my phone around in my hands, avoiding the call to my mom. Other than a text from my boss letting me know he emailed my work schedule for next week to me, no one has contacted me. Once the color changes to my eyes became noticeable, I stopped being social. After a few weeks of not returning phone calls, the calls followed my lead and stopped as well.

My mother never lets me hide, though. Her panicked messages come more frequently. Unlocking my phone, I click on my last missed call from her.

She answers immediately. “Are you okay? Where are you? Why haven’t you answered any of my messages? Do you need me to come get you?” Concern laces her rushed questions.

“Mom!” I’m finally able to say something. “I’m sorry I worried you. I’m fine. I did have some car trouble, but it’s being taken care of.”

“Your father and I will come and get you. You don’t have to do this alone. It’s no trouble for—”

I cut her off. “Really, I’m okay. Actually, I’m better than okay”—a small, white-lie won’t kill me, hopefully—“I’ve found a doctor that has seen my issue before, but she says it’s hereditary. Do you think we missed asking someone in the family about my condition?”

As soon as I realized what was going on, my mom and I did extensive research on the medical histories of both sides of the family. We didn’t find anything that would support the changes from brown to the orange tint to my eyes. At least, no one admitted to it.

“You found someone. Wow! I’m glad. You should tell that doctor to write a paper on it because there’s nothing out there in the medical journals we reviewed.”

I contain my laughter. My mom’s a professor. She’s spent years working on her dissertation. Knowing there’s an untapped topic out there bothers her. “I’ll mention it to her, but I think she likes to be more active with patients and less active with research.”

“Right, well, I’m glad you found someone.” Her voice drops to a whisper as her speech slows. “Is there a cure?”

“There’s no known cure. I’m going to spend some time here to understand and absorb what she can tell me, though. I just don’t want you to worry. If you can check with the family again, that would be helpful. Someone has to know something.”

Morgan mentioned that a traumatic event typically triggers the powers to awaken. Maybe her and Dad never had anything bad happen to them. I hope that’s the case because I don’t think my mom would lie to me.

“I’ll make some calls. Do you need me to send you some money for the car? Was it bad? I want you to make it home safely.” Worry etches the edges of her speech.

“I have it taken care of. I’ll call you back in a couple of days to let you know when I’m headed home. I’m trying to spend as much time learning about this, so I might not answer my phone.
